The Cost of Counseling
Counseling is expensive. There are, however, a wide range of fees and some options you should know about. Psychiatrists usually run from about $150.00 to $250.00 per session (sessions are usually 50 minutes long). Psychologists run from about $100.00 to $180.00 per session and Master's level counselors run anywhere from about $75.00 to $130.00 per session. Some counselors offer a sliding fee scale for people who have financial problems. These scales are most commonly based on a client's income and expenses.
There are also agencies that offer counseling at reduced fees. The best way to find out what is available to you is to call different counselors and agencies in your area and ask them about their fee structure.
Another important option is medical insurance. Most medical insurance covers counseling, at least to some extent. Some policies are very open to allow the client to choose from many different therapists or types of therapy. Others limit the policy owners either to specific therapists or types of therapy. Most insurance companies require the client to pay a portion of the fees. If you have medical insurance call your insurance representative and ask what is covered under mental health. Although working with insurance can be complicated, most therapists are willing to help you work with your insurance company. If you would like some help finding out about your mental health coverage give us a call. One of our therapists would be happy to help you with this.
